An endless array of flavours - Italian, Greek, Chinese, Vietnamese and other Asian influences - combined with the fresh local produce is what makes contemporary Australian cuisine so amazing.
The country's wine is a worldwide phenomenon, too, and Australia is now one of the top 10 producers in the world.
Australia's wine regions produce some of the world's best chardonnays, shiraz, pinot noirs and merlots.
Take a luxury tour in a vintage car, float over the vines in a hot-air balloon, stay in a five-star chateau and experience it for yourself.
Boost Juice!!
by Matthew Lowe
Due to make an appearance in the UK in 2007, Boost juice was what kept me going through my year downunder!
City Delights
by Judith Dowsett
There are so many wonders when visiting a city so entrancing as Sydney. Selecting just one is difficult. Take a ferry to Watson's Bay, in itself a delightful way of spending a morning. Wander around the paths of the South Head enjoying the sun, sea and salty air. When you're tired and want a rest, head back to the beach and enjoy the most amazing fish lunch at Doyles. Sitting on the veranda, glass in hand, you can see the City way over in the distance, across the sparkling blue waters and hear the waves lapping gently on the sand virtually at your feet. Relax and enjoy!!
QUALITY
by LES ALEXANDER
Even at an average restaurant food is likely to be good quality whether seafood or steak and the wines are excellent. The fresh fruit is another delight.
Best experience
by Bryan Sears
Eating Morton Bay Bugs near Cairns. Fantastic !
Epicurean Delight
by Alan Bailey
Barossa Valley has the most exquisite eateries(some of which are quite expensive but a good selection to suit most pockets) and of course the most fantastic wine selection. Much drier than I realised but breathtaking scenery nontheless
Oysters
by Stuart Sinclair
On my first visit to Oz in 1958, accompanying my father on a business trip, I ate an average of a dozen and a half oysters for every day of my six week stay. I also discovered a fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coonawara Estate, a wine that I still appreciate.
Bondi Bliss
by Philippa Young
Just living in Syndey is enough to justify 'bliss'. A typical saturday morning in early July when the town has lost its tourist population would be to grab a chai latte and slice of hot banana cake and walk along the cool beach front, then scoff a hearty lunch at Gertrude and Alice's bookshop-cum-restaurant, followed by a leisurely browse of Bondi's famous Saturday market. And finally spend the rest of the day shopping in Newtown finishing off with pudding heaven at Max Branagh's chocolate restaurant! Nevermind Saturday....do this everyday!
Modern elegance
by Stephen Evans
I love the marriage of modern with quality in Australian wineries. They build beautiful, elegant modern restaurants in establishments like Yering Station near Melbourne and Jacob's Creek near Adelaide. Very Australian: modern high quality.
Breakfast @ The Pelican
by Helen Pinkerton
Breakfast with my husband and 18month old son at a beach bar called The Pelican in Sorento. The restaurant is on the beach and we were able to eat breakfast and watch our son play in the shallow surf for hours. Fantastic
Stepping into magic
by Joan Wucher King
We'd been told of a spectacular thai restaurant in a "rainforest" in the hills beyond Noosa. After some extraordinary directions (like turning right at the large plaster horse) we turned off a plain old country road and into a forest that was like Shangri La. The restaurant itself, Spirit House, offers a series of open pavilions in this idyllic and dreamworld setting, with some of the best and most original Thai cooking either of us have ever sampled. It remains amongst the memorable restaurant experiences we've enjoyed -- with active competition from a range of fantastic fusion and traditional restaurants in Australia.
Barossa Valley
by Helen Anderton
My daughter and I visited the Barossa Valley and the famous Jacob’s Creek winery. We had a very friendy welcome and a Viticulture tour and overview with their nursery manager. Then on to to Orlando Wines for some tasting and cellar samples. We then headed to Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre for a wonderful lunch at Jacob’s Restaurant. We stayed at the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort which is a beautiful hotel with beautiful setttings. We would love to visit Australia again. It was an experience of a lifetime!
Hunter Valley
by Lynda Ulyatt
My son lives in Australia and we visited him at Christmas! He took us to the Hunter Valley for 3 days, we stayed in a lodge on a working vineyard. It was fantastic! We travelled around the Hunter valley to quite a few well known vineyards tasting wines...FABULOUS!
Sizzling Steak to Die For
by Megan Whiteside
I would have to say the Australians certainly know how to cook a steak. In outback Victoria on a warm summer's day, I recall devouring the most tender and mouth-watering chargrilled steak, straight off the barbeque. And guess where I was? At a winery in Rutherglen with a chilled glass of Pinot. Unforgettable!
Wine tour
by Julia McNeil
My husband and I did a 3-day tour of the Clare Valley wine region. The journey from Adelaide took an hour and a half after which we spent the rest of the day and the whole of the next day sampling some of the best wine, including Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, we’ve ever had. In between this we ate at some fantastic restaurants and shopped in the towns before retiring to a beautiful country house where we chatted late into the night with our fellow wine buffs and tour guides. We’re already planning our next trip to the Hunter Valley.
South Melbourne Market
by Robert Griffiths
My wife and I were enjoying a leisurely morning; strolling along the streets of South Melbourne, drinking coffee and taking in the gastronomic delights. When we stumbled across the jewel in the crown – South Melbourne Market. The colours of the stalls were so vibrant and the smells so rich and inviting. They were full of the freshest examples of fruits, vegetables, cheeses and meats from all over Australia. The foods were influenced by cultures from across the globe – it was a truly cosmopolitan experience. The secrets out about Australia’s quality grub - it’s the fabulous ingredients that they have aplenty.
Sounds of Silence dinner
by Heather Hewitt
Champagne and canapes at sunset overlooking Uluru, starched linen, silver cutlery, superb dinner with the best Oz specialities and wine. Then the candlelights dimmed, and an astronomer described stars in the clear night sky, and his torch discovered a wild dingo, scrounging for any scraps. Brandies, and we raised our glasses once more to toast all the guests - a fitting finale to a most wonderful evening never to be forgotten.
Two wines and five fishes
by Mary Lane-Jones
On a recent overland coast to coast trip in Australia, one of the many memorable eating and drinking experiences was raiding the fabulous Sydney Fish Market. We took a selection of delectable cooked shellfish and seaweed salad. and headed up to one of Sydney's northern beaches. We didn't forget the fabulous wine - Yellowtail from the Hunter Valley is a favourite.
